BY: SABRINA MARTIN, JANE ROUTLEDGE, MIRANDA BEER AND ANDONI FOULIDIS Comparing The Singing Silence and Snow
2
Snow The Singing Silence Outlines how the narrator interprets her and her lovers relationship, specifically one winter Describes how their relationship was pointless “it was as hopeless as giving a child a matched cup and saucer” Ends describing how things get lost, love ends, things fail eventually, people conflict Vicente breaking an ancient amphora that belonged to an American tourist. The American failed to give him his correct contact information for Vicente to deliver an ancient relic. Theme- Failure
3
Snow The Singing Silence Told in conversation style, narrator talking to her lover describes how things between her and her lover were good (the way she saw them) and how he perceived/ remembered them (not as good) The two points of view are very different, clearly portrayed differently Due to the fact that both P.O.V are so incompatible, the failure in the relationship was inevitable When the first person narrator “Heard the story of Vicente” from the fisherman, the point of view seems to change to third person. For example, When Vicente left Barcelona, “he knew that his years there had been a prison of his own making”. The writer revealed Vicente’s character to the readers and awakened sympathy. P.O.V
4
Snow The Singing Silence Symbolism “…as the rain fell, the cover collected more and more water until it finally spilled onto the concrete.” Suggests that the relationship would bound to end “spill over,” but it was just a matter of time and build up of events No blame is portrayed, the build up was natural and so was the spill, a force of nature Amplification “The gardens of starfish, the varicolored, bug-eyed gentle fish that followed him, the slant of translucent sunlight on the mysterious caves and rocks – these he recounted to the fishermen who toiled upon the surface and the sea.” Literary Devices
5
Snow The Singing Silence More verbal tension Narrators language gives the impression that everything is fine at the start, tension is built when she explains the cup and saucer simile More situational tension Vicente broke the ancient amphora When he had to beg for the American tourists contact information Here Vicente was anxious and “wanted to make amends”. Tension Developed
6
Snow The Singing Silence Narrator is reflective, comparing the P.O.V of herself and her lover, where it went wrong Changes from a light tone to sad and bittersweet At the end of the story, there is no real solution to the problem, they are just left with more questions. The narrators point of view does not completely describe Vicente's happiness and experiences when looking for an amphora. Language Used
