The Age of Invention

2 Transportation Improvements
Cities needed ways to transport people farther. Mass transit: Public transportation that move large numbers of people w/regular stops. Streetcars: Early ones were horse-drawn. San Francisco built cable car lines powered by steam. Quickly replaced with electric trolleys. Subways: 1st subway built in Boston, Ma. 1897

4 Automobiles German, Nikolaus Otto, invented the internal combustion engine, 1867. 1893 Charles & Frank Duryea built the first practical motorcar in the U.S. $2500 price tag made it for the wealthy only.

5 Airplanes 1903 Orville & Wilbur Wright accomplished the first true flight in an airplane. Took place at Kitty Hawk, NC – lasted 12 seconds.

6 Communications Improvements
Telegraph: Sent messages over wire via electricity. Invented in 1837 by Samuel Morse. Telephone: Transmitted voices via electricity. 1st patented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell. Typewriter: A writing machine. Invented in 1867 by Christopher Sholes in Milwaukee, Wi. Designed the QWERTY keyboard.

8 Electricity Thomas Edison: 1876 Opened a research lab in NJ.
“ Genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration.” Failure was as valuable to Edison as success. Invented an incandescent bulb. Designed & produced all parts necessary for an electric network. Designed and built his own electric plant.
