what it is, and what it isn’t Is: – An opportunity to work on some subject that interests you – One course divided into two semesters – Self-initiated and self-directed – Your chance to do your best work Is not: – A simple process – Something you can put together a few days before the final

rough schedule Semester 1 – Develop and research some topic – Develop Architectural Program – Generate a Concept – Choose an appropriate building Semester 2 – Design project based on semester 1 work – Schematics, DD, and constructions drawings – Killer renderings, animations, presentations, models

where to start? Refine the proposal – What do you want to know? – If you have a project type already, what research topic will inform your design? – If you have a building already, how can you figure out what belongs in it? – Describe possible avenues of research Place your first impressions into the thesis diagram
8
anti-thesis Who is most biased about your subject? What books or magazines might be misleading? Is there an image that would be the opposite of what you think you might want to accomplish? Are there any uncomfortable associations with your ideas? Are there any clichés or obvious answers to avoid?
9
my informal goal for the year: for you to recognize a good design.
