NRW – An Improved Situation
Non-Revenue Water NRW – An Improved Situation NRW is continually being assessed by water authorities in SE Asia. Many experts over the years have provided invaluable training and guidance in assisting to bring NRW levels down. Water Authorities are utilizing their own skills and technologies in the constant battle to bring down NRW levels.
9
NRW – An Improved Situation
Non-Revenue Water NRW – An Improved Situation Pressure and Asset Management are two key component of the four pillars of reducing NRW, and AVK Malaysia are keen to provide as much assistance to the Water Authorities as possible.
10
NRW – PRESSURE MANAGEMENT
Non-Revenue Water NRW – PRESSURE MANAGEMENT It is known Pressure Management can have a positive effect on loss management actions and revenue recovery programs. In systems that have low pressure and in some cases intermittent supply, a rugged assessment of the various types of control can be made: Pressure sustaining Altitude and level control Transient or Surge control Pressure Reducing
11
Pressure Sustaining Non-Revenue Water
In systems with weak hydraulics and high head losses, some areas may experience a normal service at the expense of another area. A large user such as an industry, located at a lower elevation, may be taking large quantities of water thus creating a potential deficit across the system. Pressure sustaining valves can be used to ensure upstream district pressures are not reduced at the expense of downstream demands.
12
Altitude and Level Control
Non-Revenue Water Altitude and Level Control Basic Altitude Valve control is used to control the high water level in tanks or reservoirs without the need for float pilot or electrical devices. This relatively inexpensive control ensures no loss of water due to overfilling of tanks. More detailed level control valve installations exist, such as: Modulating Float Level and Pressure Sustaining Control Valve Modulating Float Level and Solenoid Control
13
Transient or Surge Control
Non-Revenue Water Transient or Surge Control Pressure transients are found to be one of the main causes of high frequencies of new leaks. Systems with intermittent supply have a particular problem with destructive transients. Transient control is a very effective pressure management tool. Transient control can be undertaken by using efficient pump controls, by ensuring that delicate sections of the distribution system are protected by surge control valves and quite often by simply ensuring that valve operation is undertaken in a slow and smooth manner.
14
Pressure Reduction Non-Revenue Water
Many, if not most, of the Water Authorities in SE Asia have already embarked upon a pressure reduction program. Pressure Reduction control types can be classified as follows: Pump Control Sectorisation (DMA / PMA) Fixed outlet valve control Time modulated valve control Flow or demand based valve control Remote node closed loop valve control
15
Non-Revenue Water PRV - Controllers Third Party PRV controllers assist in controlling the pressures for differing regimes: Time regulated Flow / Demand Modulation Pressure regulated at Critical Point

AVIT ASSET MANAGEMENT - GIS Asset management technology is at the forefront of most major pipeline industries around the globe. When problems have been identified with buried assets in the past, it has highlighted a lack of accurate records – especially with regards to specific locations. Records do exist but in difficult and often inaccessible forms. GIS has certainly assisted with locations for valves but only if the GIS has been updated.

Asset Management ASSET MANAGEMENT - GIS An accurate, up-to-date GIS provides the end user with locations of all their valves. These valves are necessary for the closing of water pipes during essential mains repair works, and also for the rehabilitation or replacement of older mains. Technology is available to assist with the location and verification of new valve installations.
24
ASSET MANAGEMENT The system is designed with two purposes in mind:
To enable the End Users to fully record, track and identify exactly where their assets are located. To enhance full traceability of installed assets by the provision of digitally recorded quality and test data at the point of production.

How It Works The system is based on 3 platforms:
Asset Management How It Works The system is based on 3 platforms: Customer Management System– This is the providers internal control system. Mobile App – A simple app which is designed to allow easy asset tracking. Web Portal – The user friendly portal will provide End Users with data for their installed product.
26
Asset Management How It Works Principally the system utilises a QR (Quick Response) code present on an asset. These simple but powerful QR codes allow the system to add to a database of collected data.

Asset Management The technology offers users the following benefits: A full, auditable installation record which includes valve data, GPS location, photo of installation, working pressure and any relevant notes. A simple, user friendly interface ensuring valve asset management and monitoring is an easier process. In an emergency situation valve assets can be located quickly along with the relevant product and installation data. Data gathered can be easily exported into a common file format for adding into specific End User GIS mapping systems. Once the valve asset has been installed, the photograph can be used to assist in recording the quality of valve installation.

Presentation Conclusion:
NRW is still a large problem for most water authorities. Pressure Management needs to be assessed. Asset management – How can the authorities be assisted into the future.
