One third of all households in the US are cost burdened 19.8 million Americans pay more than 50% of their incomes on housing. The share of renters aged 25-34 with cost burdens increased from 40% to 46% from 2003-2013 while the share with severe burdens rose from 19% to 23% The existing housing stock is unprepared to the needs of a large and growing senior population.

About half of renters and a third of homeowners with mortgages in El Paso County are cost burdened. There is a gap of 24,513 affordable housing units for households making up to $67,000/yr. The lack of affordable housing for extremely low income households has serious implications in our work to end homelessness.
