Did you know It’s a metric world The united states is the only western country not presently using the metric system as its primary system of measurement. The only other countries in the world not using metric system as their primary system of measurement are Yemen, Brunei, and a few small islands; see Fig. 8.15.

Importance of units Lost in space In September 1999, the United States lost the Mars Climate Orbiter as it approached Mars. The loss of the $125 million spacecraft was due to scientists confusing English units and metric units. Two spacecraft teams, one at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in Pasadena, CA, and the other at a Lockheed Martin facility in Colorado, where the spacecraft was built, were unknowingly exchanging some vital information in different units. The missing Mars Climate Orbiter

Length American standard 1 mile = 1760 yards = (5280 feet) 1 yard = 3 feet 1 foot = 12 inches Metric standard 1 kilometer = 1000 meters 1 meter = 10 decimeters 1 decimeter = 10 centimeters ( 1 meter = 100 centimeters) 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters Conversion of units: A football field measures 100 yards long and 53 yards wide. Find the measurements of the field in feet.
12
NOTE Choose the conversion factor that will cancel the units you wish to eliminate. Write the units in the equation and make sure they cancel properly.
13
Work in pairs and convert the following A. 0.153 mile to yards B. 627 feet to yards C. 762 feet to inches A. 269 yd B. 209 yd C. 9144 in
14
Converting areas and volumes You have a room that measures 3m by 2m but in order to find how many tiles you need, you need to find the area in square feet.
15
Converting areas and volumes Your project is to cover a 7yd by 5 yd garden with grass. You can buy the grass sod by square feet. Each roll is 10 square feet, how many do you need to buy?
16
Converting rates to other units A rate is a specific kind of ratio, in which two measurements are related to each other. Ex. Rate of travel (mi/h) or (km/h) Flow rate (gal/min or (m 3 /s) Application rate (lb/acre) Unit price ($/lb)
17
A leaking fuel tank A fuel tank underground is leaking at a rate of 5.00 L/min find the leaking rate in gal/hr
18
Metric prefixes
19
Converting between metric units A. 0.000473 V to mV B. 7.68x10 -5 kW to W C. 825x10 4 N to kN A. 0.473 mV B. 7.68 W C. 8.25 x10 3 kN
20
Using more than one conversion factor Sometimes we need to go through more than one conversion in order to get to the desired unit. For example if you want to convert from meters to miles. m => km=> mile
21
Try it If you want to run a half a marathon, which is 21097 m and you want to know its equivalence in miles.
