2
2 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 SSL Contracting Status Phase RR contract mod funding provided should carry us through Feb. Phase B/C/D Contract negotiations still pending Given the limited time remaining we should consider another extension
3
3 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Schedule Status Scheduler now working MAVEN part time –Hopefully full time soon –She has started extracting instrument level schedules from the master schedule CESR schedule update provided –FM delivers well before any other hardware is ready, as expected Key schedule milestone this month was the SWEA Peer Review, which was successful
4
4 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Manpower Continue ramping up –Have part-time support from some people still working RBSP; expect this will be adequate for the next few months, but will monitor progress Decided recently to hire an additional ME to help fill the gap, primarily for SWIA/STATIC –Finally got two new EE positions listed, starting to get resumes SEP, Power Converter support QA team is short –Ron Jackson still out due to injuries He is planning to return in late March –Meanwhile SSL QA team is stretched thin with current work Jorg Fischer is taking the lead for now –A QA Audit of SSL is planed for April, further stretching the team Scheduler is part time –Hope to get her full time soon (HR issue) –Meanwhile schedule reporting has not ramped up
5
5 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Manpower [2] Thermal Support is thin –Having trouble getting enough attention from the Thermal Engineer (he is still finishing up other projects) –SWEA modeling of thruster heating mitigations, instrument preliminary models coming due –Requested GSFC support (for SWEA thermal)
6
6 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Accomplishments Completed SWEA peer review at CESR Discovered an issue with STATIC FOV, worked with LM to find alternate mounting scheme Developed a long lead parts list and provided to Project Got a MAVEN Lab space allocated at SSL and started work clearing it out More in instrument sections…
7
7 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Ongoing Work Supporting Project planning process Supporting EMC, Payload, SDT working groups Supporting ICD development –MICD development in progress Level 4/5 requirements in work –Some instrument specifications still outstanding (late) QA: MAIP review received from GSFC –We need to review and respond to comments
8
8 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Ongoing Trades Second STATIC still under consideration –Alternative of keeping STATIC non-redundant involves added risk, significant extra reliability analysis work which will have to start soon PFDPU form factor, number of boards –Determining optimum board size to minimize mass within system design constraints –An increase is likely as a number of boards are constrained for space – likely to have a mass impact
9
9 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Issues SEP FOV Issue (APP impingement) –Working with LM – longer APP boom improves the situation, but things are still changing SWEA Thruster, Aero heating –LM Rotated SWEA boom back to 45 degrees to Sun line to limit thruster heating of SWEA –Need to modify thermal characteristics of surfaces in SWEA aperture to avoid excessive heating - candidate solutions in work MAG issues meeting requirements with proximity to solar array –Juno qual panel tests indicates we have a problem –Magnetics Working Group considering options
10
10 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Top Risks New: P09

12 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Risks List [2]
13
13 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 PFP Mass Increased EUV mass to reflect Option3a addition Increased EUV harness mass based on new estimate Still plenty of margin due to STATIC, SWEA, MAG harnesses becoming LM responsibility Liens: –Second STATIC, ~3.69Kg (plus a small increment to PFDPU for additional interface), if approved –PFDPU increased board size, ~1kg (TBR)
14
14 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Mass Tracking Chart
15
15 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 PFP Power Small increase in LPW CBE resulting in reduced contingency Liens: –Second STATIC: 5.75W –Expect to need operational heat during eclipse None allocated, amount needed pending thermal analysis

23
23 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 STATIC Status Rev 1 of STATIC Specifications delivered to Dave Curtis, currently making corrections based on feedback. Bill Elliott will retire and pass the STATIC mechanical torch to Greg Dalton over the next few months. Paul Turin will obtain an additional ME to work with Dalton on STATIC/SWIA mechanical design Primary focus of mechanical development will be the mechanical attenuator. Mario Marckwordt now working 25% on developing assembly and test procedures for thin carbon foils VMI has returned dimensions for 15 kV multiplier Testing on Digital and TDC boards continues. Testing on HV Sweep board continues.

24 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 MAVEN PFP SWEA Status February 2010 Dave Mitchell, SWEA Lead
25
25 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 SWEA Status SWEA Peer Review in Toulouse (Feb 3-4, 2010) –STEREO SWEA optics design adopted, with possible minor adjustment of deflector position to improve response vs. deflection angle –top cap will be constructed from aluminum –both inner and outer hemispheres will be scalloped to minimize scattered electron contamination –surfaces coated with carbon black or black chrome to minimize scattered light (nuflon will not be used anywhere) –back sides of deflectors will be conducting –A111F preamps will be used –outer hemisphere bias (V 0 = E/2) will be used below 50 eV reduces geometric factor for extreme events in the sheath provides finer energy resolution for ionospheric photoelectrons only works when sensor head is in shadow may require more than 48 energy steps at low altitudes
26
26 PFP MSR, 02/17/2010 Work in progress –FPGA Spec: outer hemisphere bias scheme requires rethinking operating modes and telemetry use still two main modes (solar wind and ionosphere) E = constant (E < 50 eV) E/E = constant (E > 50 eV) may need 64 energy steps to take full advantage of finer resolution –possible adjustment of deflector position to flatten response vs. deflection angle –selection of surface coating (carbon black, black chrome, …) thermal analysis needed (survive thruster plume and sunlight) SWEA Status – cont.
