Mt Etna Volcano (Italy) 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: Mt Etna burst into life with a series of massive explosions in October 2002. There had been some warning the previous 48 hours with a series of earth tremors – later put down to magma rising up the main vent. Montserrat (Volcano) 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: Montserrat is a small island in the caribbean.There is a volcanic area located in the south of the island on Soufriere hills called chances peak. Before 1995 it has been dormant for over 300 years. Photo: PLCs (PLaCe facts): Montserrat was invaded by the French in 1664,1667 and 1782. Much of the island was devastated when it erupted in July 1995. As a result of the volcanic activity Plymouth,the islands capital, became uninhabitable and was abandoned.

Haiti (Earthquake) 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: The earthquake was caused by the north American plate sliding past the Caribbean plate at a conservative plate margin. Both plates move in the same direction, but one moves faster than the other. The pressure that was built up because of the friction between the 2 plates was eventually released causing a magnitude 7 earthquake on the ritcher scale with an epicentre 16 miles west of port u prince and a shallow focus of 5 miles. Photo: PLCs (PLaCe facts): The earthquake struck at 16:43(4:53pm) local time on Tuesday 12 January 2010. 316,000 people were killed and 1 million people were made homeless. 3 million people were affected by the earthquake.

Christchurch (Earthquake) 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: The February 2011 Christ church earthquake was a powerful natural event that severely damaged new Zealand's second largest city and killing 185 people in one of the nations deadliest peacetime disasters. Photo: PLCs (PLaCe facts): The earthquake caused widespread damage across Christchurch especially in the central city and eastern subhurbs,with damage exacerbated by buildings and infrastructure already being weakened by 4 September 2010 earthquake and its aftershocks. Significant liquefaction affected the eastern subhurbs,producing around 400,000 tonnes of silt.

Hurricane Katrina/Sandy 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: Sandy began as a tropical wave in the Caribbean on Oct. 19 It quickly developed, becoming a tropical depression and then a tropical storm in just six hours. Hurricane sandy a late season post tropical cyclone swept through the Caribbean and up the east coast of the united states in late October 2012. Photo: PLCs (PLaCe facts): The storm left dozens dead, thousands homeless and millions without power. The total damage is expected to be in the billions.

Cyclone Nargis/ Typhoon Haiyan 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: Cyclone nargis happened in may 2008.little warning was given. Winds of 200km per house and the low pressure created a storm sturge,measuring 6.3 metres high. Photo: PLCs (PLaCe facts): It mainly affected Myanmar (Burma) a country south west of Bangladesh. Areas were left without water, food and electricity. The UN suggest that nearly 200,000 people died.

Drought in Ethiopia (Sahel) 2 Sentence Summary of the case study: The Sahel region of Africa has been suffering from drought on a regular basis since the early 1980s. The area naturally experiences alternating wet and dry seasons. If the rains fail it can cause drought. Photo: PLCs (PLaCe facts): The Sahel stretches for 500km from Senegal Mauritania on the west coast to Sudan and Ethiopia on the east. The region covers 1/5 th of Africa.
