5 Stump Speeches The candidate and his or her staff will usually write a single speech to be delivered at most public appearances Often said 2 to 3 times a day for months on end. It may be altered slightly to include current events or specific content retaining to the audience at hand.

7 Campaign Financing Where do they get their money?  Presidential Primaries: raise money from citizens and interest groups  Congressional candidates get their money from private sources.  In presidential primaries, the federal government will provide matching funds, dollar for dollar, for all monies raised from individual donors who contribute no more than $250.

8 Campaign Finance Act of 1973 As a result of Nixon and the Watergate scandal, individuals could not contribute more than $1,000 to a candidate. Birth of PACs(Political Action Committees):  Must have at least 50 members  All members must voluntarily give to at least 5 federal candidates  Cannot give more than $5,000 to any candidate in any election or more than $15,000 per year to any political party.

9 Campaign Finance Act of 1973 The new law also made federal tax money available to help pay for presidential primary campaigns. Changes how money is spend on election, and how it is spent. There are now more than 4,000 PACs Why do you think PACs donate?
