1 Lesson 34: Paul’s Arrival in Rome and Imprisonment for Two Years (27:1-44)

2 Overview of the Passage & Helpful Facts for Further Bible Study A.Following the shipwreck, Paul & company safely made it to the island of Malta (28:1-10). 1.Malta (a.k.a. its ancient name, Melita) was 58 miles south of Sicily (28:1). 2.The natives, perhaps providentially, extended unusual kindness for 3 months (28:2, 11). 3.Paul was bitten by a poisonous viper but miraculously suffered no harm (28:3-6). 4.Paul miraculously healed the sick and diseased on the island of Malta (28:7-10). I.

3 Overview of the Passage & Helpful Facts for Further Bible Study B.Paul made the final trek of his journey, as a prisoner, to the city of Rome (28:11-16). 1.After three months in Malta, Julius sailed his prisoners toward Rome (28:11). 2.Then, the prisoners were transported over land the remaining ~150 miles to Rome. 3.Paul finally arrived in Rome, about three years after being arrested in Jerusalem (16). I.

4 Overview of the Passage & Helpful Facts for Further Bible Study C.Even in prison, Paul labored for the Lord’s sake and His gospel for two years (28:17-31). 1.One of the first things Paul did in Rome was call the Jewish leaders to him (28:17-22). 2.Paul preached the gospel of Jesus and His kingdom to the Jewish leaders (28:23). 3.The response of the Jewish leaders to the gospel was divided (28:24-29). 4.Paul was imprisoned in Rome (in a rented house) for two years (28:30-31). I.

5 Overview of the Passage & Helpful Facts for Further Bible Study D.After the two years, Paul was released from Roman custody for a time. 1.From Biblical records, all we know of his Post-Acts life is from 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. a)At the very least, he visited Macedonia (1 Tim. 1:3); Crete (Tit. 1:5); Nicopolis (Tit. 3:12); Miletus (2 Tim. 4:20); Troas (2 Tim. 4:13); maybe Spain (Rom. 15:28). b)During this time, he wrote 1 Timothy and Titus. 2.From historical records, we know that Paul was imprisoned in Rome one last time. a)During this time, he wrote 2 Timothy, and his time of death was close (2 Tim. 4:6). b)Around 68 A.D., Paul was beheaded. I.

6 A.The Biblical truths of and the preaching of Jesus and His kingdom cannot be separated! 1.Man often seeks to emphasize one over the other or one without the other. 2.New Testament preaching always ties Jesus to His kingdom & the kingdom to Jesus! 3.Preaching in Acts always kept the two together (cf. 1:3, 6; 8:12; 20:24-31; 28:23, 31). II. Significant Truths from this Passage for Our Understanding

7 B.God’s message of salvation does not change based on time, location or audience! 1.About 30 years after Pentecost, Paul was still preaching Jesus and His kingdom! 2.About 1,500 miles away from Jerusalem, Paul was still preaching the same message! 3.To Jews, Gentiles, slaves, free, men, women, the message of salvation was the same! II. Significant Truths from this Passage for Our Understanding

8 A.May we be known for extending extraordinary kindness and hospitality to strangers! B.The sight of our brethren should spark thanksgiving and encouragement in us! C.Even when things don’t seem to go our way, may we make opportunities for the gospel! D.May we never be ashamed to preach about the Lord Jesus and His kingdom/church! III. Practical Points of Application for Our Lives
