System Process or How it Works After food is chewed and swallowed, it goes down the esophagus and enters the stomach, where it is further broken down by powerful stomach acids. From the stomach the food travels into the small intestine. Your stomach stretches when you eat like a balloon being filled with air.

Any Additional Information A muscular tube about 10 inches long that connects the pharynx and the stomach. Food stays in your small intestine for 4 to 8 hours. The digestive system tube is 20 feet long.
