Test Background Bill signed in 1997 Must be completed 12 days before or after 85% of a school's year has passed First comprehensive tests in California administered to grades 2-11 in Spring 1998 Stanford Achievement Test Series, Ninth Edition (Stanford 9) 1998-2002 California Standards Test (CSTs) from 2003 to present
3
Purpose The purpose of the California Standards Tests (CST) is to determine students' achievement of the California content standards for each grade or course. Students' scores are compared to preset criteria to determine whether the students' performance on the test is advanced, proficient, basic, below basic, or far below basic. The state target is for all students to score at the proficient and advanced levels.
4
What That Means The State Board of Education adopted these standards, which specify what all children in California are expected to know and be able to do in each grade or course.
5
Test Includes The 2011 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program includes four components: California Standards Tests (CSTs) California Modified Assessment (CMA) California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS)
6
Teachers Affected ALL TEACHERS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS! THAT MEANS YOU!!! =)
7
Who Takes It The 2011 CSTs were required for students who were enrolled in the following grades/courses at the time of testing or who had completed a course during the 2010–11 school year, including 2010 summer school.

The CAPA is an individually administered performance assessment with all tasks linked to the California ELA, mathematics, and science content standards. The CAPA is administered to one student at a time Tests represents specific grade spans. Most students eligible for the CAPA take the level corresponding to their enrollment (assigned) grade.
