Natural resources – raw materials that exist in a natural state and used to make other goods Forest – a large growth of trees Soils Loam – soil made up of sand, silt, clay, and organic matter Fossil Fuels – resources formed millions of years ago from the remains of plants and animals under the earth’s crust Anthracite coal – HARD coal Bituminous coal - SOFT coal Natural Gas – Gas coming from the earth’s crust Petroleum – (oil) flammable liquid, drilled from the ground,, refined into gasoline and fuel oils

Mineral Resources – any useful substance found in the earth that has not been formed by plant and animal remains Human Resources – utilizing the talents of the states population Census – government count of the population – 10 years Population Density – average number of people per square mile
