1 (Tune) Tuesday, November 10 th Good morning, class, and welcome back from your extended weekend! I hope you all made the most of it No Homework tonight As you enter class, you should hear a song playing over the speakers. Please have a seat, open up your ELA A notebook, write today’s date and respond to the following: What type of vibe or mood does the music give off? How does it make you feel? What does it remind you of?

2 Today’s Learning Targets I have a better understanding of the setting of The Cay I reflected on what it would be like to have to fight for survival I can recall facts about WWII and the Caribbean

3 Siri, how do I get to those targets? Introductory PP and completion of skeletal notes Journal Entry- “Stranded” Exit slip- “One thing I learned today…”

5 Background Information for The Cay Please put your name at the top of your skeletal notes These notes contain important background information that will help you better understand our novel During your journal entry, I will pass a hole puncher around for you to use

6 About the Author  The Cay was written by Theodore Taylor.  As a kid, enjoyed roaming and exploring fields, muddy creeks, and salt marshes --> Adventure-oriented  During Korean War, stationed in the Caribbean

7 About the Author continued…  Read an account about a small boy who was lost at sea after a German U-boat sank his ship  All these experiences inspired The Cay Cay (noun): a low island made of sand or coral

8 World War II  Allies (U.S., France, Great Britain) vs. Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan)  War began in 1939 due to Germany invading Poland  Following Pearl Harbor, December 7 th, 1941, U.S. entered the War on the side of the Allies  Other major events include The Holocaust, The Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

9 Curacao, a Caribbean Island  To survive during WW II, England needed supplies from North America.  Curacao, the Caribbean island in The Cay, produced gasoline and oil needed for war

10 Curacao, a Caribbean Island  Large tankers transported these resources from the island across the Atlantic Ocean to England  Curacao - Ruled by Dutch, but African and Caribbean in culture

11 German U-Boats  German Submarines - "Unterseeboote“  These U-Boats destroyed the supply ships using torpedoes  During the war, they sunk over 5,000 ships

12 Journal Entry Please respond to the following prompt in your ELA A notebook. Write in complete sentences, and be prepared to share what you write. “If you were stranded on an island alone, how would you survive? How would you find or make shelter? How would you feed yourself?” If you finish early, use the opportunity to read from your SSR book

13 Closure What is one thing you learned today about WWII, Curacao, the Caribbean, or anything else involving the background information for The Cay? Reminder: No HW We will begin reading the novel tomorrow!
