Time with the DS 2015 Church Conference
2
According to Jesus every church has … One mission: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you (Matthew 28:19-20a, CEB). One promise: “Look, I myself will be with you every day … (v. 20b.)

“The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” Paragraph 120, The Book of Discipline 2012
4
What is a “disciple”?
5
A “Disciple” is a follower of Jesus who … Prays - listens to the voice of the Spirit (Prayer) Worships - is engaged in spiritual formation (Presence) Gives - strives to be a good steward (Gifts) Serves - finds their unique place of service in the church & world (Service) Witnesses - shares experiences of God with others (Witness)
6
The Process of Disciple-making (the how): Step 1 – From stranger to guest (welcomed) Step 2 – From guest to connected (engaged) Step 3 – From connected to believer (committed) Step 4 – From believer to laborer (co-missioned)
7
“Get on the balcony” A leader must be able to see as though standing on a high balcony. What do you see? How is your disciple-making process working? Are people moving into and through your process? What benchmarks do you use to make your assessments?
8
“ Measureable Fruit” (or possible benchmarks for determining a disciple- making church): 1. Disciples worship (average worship attendance) 2. Disciples make new disciples (professions of faith) 3. Disciples engage in growing as a disciple 4. Disciples engage in mission (hands-on mission) 5. Disciples give to mission
9
Does your church have a clearly articulated process of disciple-making?
10
According to Jesus, we have … One mission: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you (Matthew 28:19-20a, CEB). One promise: “Look, I myself will be with you every day … (v. 20b.)
