The conspiracy theory Some people do not agree with the traditional story of the gunpowder plot. Instead they believe that the government knew about the plot and even encouraged it. Some historians think that James I and Robert Cecil hatched the plot themselves and framed the Catholics. Let’s investigate….Did Cecil plan the plot make the Catholics even more unpopular?

Your task In today’s lesson you are going to look at various pieces of evidence and reach a judgement to if the Gunpowder plotters were framed or not. In groups you will look at the evidence and the arguments and discuss if the plotters and Guy Fawkes were framed. When looking at the evidence Make your Point clearly and Provide Evidence and Examples using the handouts.

SUSPICIOUS Good detectives are… CECIL
Can you find any evidence of a connection between the plot and Cecil? Has Cecil tried to hide anything? Did Cecil stop people from talking? Did he know details of the plot before it happened? SUSPICIOUS MOTIVE Why would Cecil set up Catholic plotters and only catch them at the last minute? Can you think of any reason why the Catholics would want to plan a plot against the king? RELIABILITY Which evidence is the most trustworthy? Which is the least trustworthy?

James I= 1603 Under Elizabeth I the the Catholics had been persecuted- had to say mass in secret James I brought new hope- his wife was catholic and he had relaxed persecution of catholics However, some of his advisors put him under pressure to please puritans etc, started persecutions etc Discontent grew- 2 catholic plots against James had already been thwarted THE PLOT 5 men wanted to blow up parliament on its opening on Nov : replace him with his daughter, thereby returning it to catholic Rented a cellar below the house of lords and began stockpiling it with gunpowder BUT as the plot neared fruition, the brother in law of one of the plotters got a letter warning him to stay away from the house of lords/opening of parliament (Monteagle) Guy Fawkes was arrest 4th november- tortured for 2 days in tower of london- finally confessed, but by then the others had escaped – others ended up having a final stand/shoot out at a manor house somewhere out of london- survivors taken back to london 8 ppl, including Fawkes, were hanged, drawn and quatered
