4. Background Observation is one of the main skills to be taught ad developed in this unit. In some cases, scientists use only their five senses to study their subject. In other cases, they may use equipment, such as hand lenses or microscopes, to enhance their senses. In this lesson, students will be asked to use their eyes, nose, and fingers to observe dry bean seeds. (Tasting is not permitted in this unit.) Predicting is another skill that is woven into the unit. A prediction is much than a guess, because it is based on observations, experience, or scientific reasons, Students should be able to give reasons whenever they make predictions.
