EARTHQUAKE IMPACTS Brian Walker
2
Immediate Impacts The impacts to a community from earthquake events include injuries to citizens, damage to property, and the demand for public safety. Widespread panic and fear to the citizens living in the affected areas.
3
Long Term Impacts Creation of faults along tectonic boundaries. Economic failures in effected areas. Aftershocks, or smaller earthquakes, hit the effected areas and create further destruction.
4
Earthquake Fault Types
5
Strike-Slip Faults Strike-Slip faults are caused when two of the earths plates move adjacent to each other. This can cause sudden, rapid movement of the crust, that could destroy homes or property.
6
Normal Faults Normal faults are caused by two of the earths plates moving away from each other. Normal faults created the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
7
Reverse Faults Reverse faults are created when two tectonic plates are forced together. As a result one of the plates is pushed upwards and creates a “Drop Off” on the surface.
8
Oblique Faults Oblique faults are formed when the tectonic plates are both moving adjacent to each other and moving away from each other.
