1 NEWINGTON HIGH SCHOOL Course Selection Process for Classes of 2015, 2016, & 2017

2 PURPOSE To provide you with sufficient information so that you and your teen can select courses which are challenging, but not overwhelming; and courses which are of interest and which help broaden one’s perspectives and skills.

3 SIGNIFICANT CHANGES 1.Minimum number of credits/courses students must take per year increases from 5 to 6. 2.No Basic Skills Assessment (BSA) classes 3.Beginning with the class of 2018, graduation requirements will increase from 21 credits to 25 credits

6 IN ADDITION…. TECHNOLOGY and SPEAKING & LISTENING: Skills will be assessed by school-wide rubrics. STUDENT SUCCESS PLANS: To be completed over the course of Grades 9-12 in Advisory and through the School Counseling Program.

7 GRADE PROMOTION FOR CLASS 2015, 2016 and 2017 4 Credits = Sophomore 9 Credits = Junior 14 Credits = Senior

9 AP ENROLLMENT PROCESS Need a B (3.33 GPA) in specified prerequisite course(s) at semester A 3.33 GPA must be maintained through the school year Failure to maintain the grade standard may result in removal from the course

23 LANGUAGE NHS OFFERS FOUR (4) LANGUAGES FRENCH SPANISH ITALIAN LATIN  World Language is NOT an NHS graduation requirement.  2 – 3 years of the same language IS required by most colleges for entry.  French & Spanish are offered through the AP Level  Italian & Latin are offered through the 4 th year

24 PLAN FOR SUCCESS !  Include courses from different subject areas  Plan a two or three year sequence  Plan for a well-rounded experience  Make the most of every day  Consult others  Use past school experiences, goals and abilities as a guide  Quality is more important than Quantity
