Electronics Investigation Investigation 1

Circuits Flow of electricity is current Current flows in a circuit Flows in one direction Closed = complete Open = incomplete Terminals - +

Simple Circuit Materials –Spring board, battery, 1 lamp Assemble them together to make a closed circuit

Draw a Diagram of Your Circuit Include battery, lamp, complete circuit, positive and negative terminals, direction of current flow Circuit wires should be at right angles

Part 3 Use spring board and three lamps to set up circuits that will allow two or more lamps to work. Do not use the switch Record two circuits with schematic wiring diagrams

Series All in one connected circuit Current passes through each component one at a time Current has only one pathway from positive terminal to negative terminal

Parallel Each component has its own pathway Separate flows of current for each component More than one way for current to flow

Series Vs. Parallel Pair up with a group next to you One group will make a series circuit The next will construct a parallel circuit Compare the brightness of the two circuits

Series Vs. Parallel What happens when you disconnect one lamp from the series circuit What happens when you disconnect one lamp from the parallel circuit Record your results from this experiment

Answer the following Which circuit shines brightly? Which one is dim? Which circuit goes out when you disconnect a lamp? Which circuit stays on Parallel Series Parallel

Investigation 1, Part 4 Create simple circuit, battery and light Add wire to lengthen circuit Now lengthen your circuit with a straw

Flow of Current Conductor –Material that transfers charge easily Insulator –Material that does not transfers charge easily

Investigation 1 Part 4 Build a circuit using the battery, one light and this time include the switch Pushing the switch should turn the light on Otherwise it is wired wrong

Short Circuits Pathways that allow the current to bypass a component Like shortcuts Steals the current from the other components

Switches An electrical component Starts and stops the flow of current When open, no current flows –Open circuit When closed, circuit is complete, current flows –Closed circuit

Electronics Investigation Investigation 1 Part 5

Series and Parallel Schematics Read the schematics Set up circuits on your spring board Fill in information asked for by each schematic

Electronics Investigation Investigation 2 Part 1

Resistors What is the result of adding a resistor to your circuits? What is one thing that you learned about resistors?
