John 14:16, The Helper – Indwelling of God the Holy Spirit Part 4
4
The Doctrine of the Indwelling of God the Holy Spirit.
5
A. Definition and Description.
6
13. Personal decisions, like how much you eat, drink or smoke, have nothing to do with the filling of the Holy Spirit.
7
Overindulgence in these things is sin, but moderation in their consumption is not sinful.
8
B. The Prophesy of the Indwelling of God the Holy Spirit was given prior to the beginning of the Church Age by Christ. John 7:39; 14:16-17; 16:13-14
9
C. Anointing is a synonym for the Indwelling of Holy Spirit. 1 John 2:20, 27
10
1. Anointing is a sign of the Royal Family of God. It is our escutcheon, demonstrating that we are Royalty and ambassadors for Christ.
11
D. Anointing was symbolized with oil because oil illustrates the power of the Indwelling of Holy Spirit. Mark 6:13; Luke 7:46; 10:34; James 5:14
12
E. There are two dispensations in which the Holy Spirit is given.
13
1. In the Church Age to produce the character of Christ in every believer. Gal 5:22-26 w/ Acts 2:1ff; 11:15, 16
14
2. In the Millennium characterised by ecstatics, Joel 2:28-29, and is said to be fulfilled in Zech 12:10.
15
F. The Primary Objectives of the Indwelling of Holy Spirit for the Church Age.
16
1. To provide a temple in your body for the indwelling of the other two members of the Trinity. This provides motivation for the attainment of spiritual objectives.
17
2. Advance to maturity and glorification of Christ is accomplished through the filling of the Spirit and perception of doctrine.
18
3. Perception of doctrine is related to the teaching ministry of the indwelling Holy Spirit. John 14:26; 16:12-15 w/ 1 Cor 2:9-16; 1 John 2:27
19
G. The Inner Conflict between the Old Sin Nature and Indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
20
1. The prior indwelling of the OSN from physical birth and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit from the new birth result in a great inner conflict. Rom 8:2-17; Gal 5:16ff
21
2. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the principle of victory over the OSN, while the filling of the Holy Spirit is the function of victory over the OSN.
22
3. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit divorces the believer from the power of the OSN and marries the believer to a 2 nd husband with a new way of life, and provides a new marriage counselor for the new life in God the Holy Spirit. Rom 7:1-6
