1 How do European countries deal with immigration?

2 Emigration out of Europe Mid-1850s, over 200K people a year were emigrating out of Europe Most were leaving Britain, Ireland, and Germany By 1907 over 1.3 million were leaving per year (Italy, E. Europe) Many immigrants did not make the journey across the Atlantic, dying in shipwrecks Poor diets also made it easier to contract diseases like cholera & typhoid. Many suffer from rancid food & water By the 1930s the huge wave of emigration out of Europe was over Starting in the 1980s, there was a large amount of immigration between European countries

3 The New Melting Pot?? Relaxed immigration rules in the EU along with booming economies in the west resulted in many Eastern Europeans immigrating west Many worked for cheap labor and did non-traditional jobs Starting in the 2000s, people from other parts of the world also immigrated to Europe because of lax rules & good economy Britain, France, and Spain saw citizens from their former colonies coming to Europe for work Spain’s population has grown 10% just from immigration However, after welcoming immigrants for years, many Europeans feel immigrants are changing the culture of their countries Illegal immigration, loss of jobs, and terrorism have been hot anti- immigration topics

4 Summer School Homework: Google “immigration issues” Find two web sites (one that supports immigration and one against immigration – legal or illegal) Write down the URL of each Pick two points made on the web site that support immigration and don’t support immigration
