Exploring the mathematics standards through Algebra Mathematics and Statistics, Team Solutions, Northland

During this session we will Engage with the mathematics standards by using an algebra problem as a basis for discussion Discuss problems encountered and possible solutions Discuss issues regarding implementation of the mathematics standards at classroom level Look at some ideas for ways to work in schools

Engaging with the standard Work quickly through the activities in Building Borders in FIO Link Algebra Book One (year 7-8) page 12-13 Using your NZC document and the mathematics standards, what would you expect a child who meets the standard at year 6 to be able to do in this activity? Above? Below?

Discuss problems encountered and possible solutions What difficulties did you have? Where could you go for more information when content knowledge or language is an issue?

Second Tier Information www.nzmaths.co.nz Go to NZC/National Standards link. Select appropriate grid, scroll down to elaboration link, scroll down to more information Patterns and Relationships.

Group Discussion What evidence and how much do I need to collect to justify my judgement about where a child sits against the mathematics Year 6 standard? When should we gather this evidence? How will I show progress throughout the year? Do we want all year 6 children in a classroom using the same assessment? Why / Why not? How much of the standard do we need to have assessed to make a decision on whether a child meets the year standard in mathematics?

Group discussion How can we keep the assessment manageable? What are key pieces of evidence that demonstrate children meeting a standard. Is it sufficient to keep my Gloss/PAT/AsTTle result as evidence or do I need to keep the actual document? What actions do we need to think about regarding information gathered? What place does the learner have in the process?

A possible starting point in schools What do we need to keep doing? What do we need to change? What do we need to do that we don’t already do?

Talking Points The standards are about strategy not knowledge. Assessment is an integral part of the programme not an add on. Work from where your school is now and move forward. This is going to take time. Set up a realistic timeline for making change.

Teachers continually adjust their teaching to match learning needs based on what they notice. Making an OTJ is a different action. What needs to happen differently?
