Synthesis Essay Observations

Grading –AP Rubric A score of “5” is considered “passing” and usually would equate to an overall score of “3” out of 5 on AP exam. A “5” earned 20/25 points on THIS essay(80%). Next semester a 5 will equal a “C” »Points: »8=25 »7=23 »6=22-21 »5=20-19 »4=18 (72%) »3=17-19

Strengths: Good voice Some good use of personal observation

To be Improved: Approach to argument Incorporating quotes Using shorter quotes Correctly citing quotes Using examples Explaining examples Paragraphing Transitions between paragraphs, ideas, sentences Use of absolutes (always, never, everybody, etc.) DON’T use “you” !!!!!!! Passive Voice Parallelism Specificity of pronouns

Approach to argument Answer the prompt. The main point of the essay is to illustrate what makes cross- cultural encounters more effective. You need to use three sources to defend your claim. Don’t let the 5 paragraph form drive content!! Develop a complex argument that builds on each point (cause/effect, deductive, etc).

Incorporating quotes/length of quotes/Citing Source You must give context (who, what where, when, etc.) before the quote. A sentence should not start with a quote!!! You probably only need a short phrase to make your point. –Example: When Cabeza De Vaca notices the sick men, he “decides to give them medicine.”(65) or (Source A)

Using examples You cannot make generalizations without giving examples to support your point. –Example: The colonists take advantage of the Native American’s hospitality. They do? Prove it? When? How? Give an example.

Explaining examples The majority of your paper should focus on explaining HOW the sources prove your argument. If you do not explain this, you are asking the reader to do all of the thinking- In other words, you are asking ME to write your essay.

Paragraphing Paragraph breaks are included so a reader can rest her mind and eye. Some ideas may extend into 2 paragraphs. Break free from the 5 paragrah essay!

Transitions: Do not only make your essay flow.. Transitions SHOW CONNECTIONS!!!

Use of absolutes (always, never, everybody, etc.) You are trying to appear reasonable- Be careful with making absolute claims. Use qualifiers-often, usually, sometimes, some people, etc.

Grammar/Usage The ETS grader handbook will explain the errors you have made. READ the ETS descriptions.
