Teacher Notes Vocabulary Magic Steps 1-5
The first step, sorting the cards and working with the picture cards, is critical. If students are allowed to quickly match cards without following the procedures, the most knowledgeable students will exert control, and they will be anxious to show what they already know. The power of Vocabulary Magic is in creating structured, student-to-student conversations using the cards. If students skip any step in the process, they are required to pick up all cards, return them to the bag, and begin again. Step 1: SORT IT The first student picks up the Card Sort vocabulary bag, removes the cards, and carefully sorts them into three separate and neat stacks. There will be one stack of words or terms, one stack of picture cards, and a final stack of definition cards. After the cards are sorted into three stacks, the picture cards are returned to the bag; students will work with these cards next. The definition cards are pushed to the side; they will be used later in the activity. Step 2: SAY IT Students focus their attention on the new words in the Card Sort. Students put the terms side-by-side horizontally across the table. It is important to note that three students working together should always sit shoulder-to-shoulder, side-by-side. After the cards are laid out, the teacher will say each word; the students will repeat each word, locate the word in the lineup, and point to the word with their fingers. Difficult words should be repeated more than once.

Teacher Notes Step 3: DESCRIBE IT Reaching into the bag, a student removes one picture card. The student then shows the picture to the group and proceeds to describe the image, providing as many details as possible. The students says, “In this picture, I see…” After fully describing the picture, the student uses the following sentence frame in an attempt to match the picture with one of the vocabulary words on the table. The student says, “I think this picture might match the word… because…” After the first student matches the picture card with the word card on the table, the bag is passed to the next student. The process is repeated until all pictures have been described and matched. It is important for the student describing the picture to make the match without input from the group. It is possible for two pictures to end up under a single vocabulary word. If that happens, the group can discuss the possibility of moving one of the pictures. If an agreement cannot be reached, the person who originally placed the card can make the final decision or leave it where it is.
3
Teacher Notes Step 4: READ IT After all the pictures are matched, students place the definition cards into the bag. The process continues, with each definition card being removed one at a time. The student removing the card must read the definition aloud to the group members and use the following frame to explain the match. The student says, “I think definition might match the word…and this picture…because…” Step 5: CHECK IT After students complete all matches, they watch the Vocabulary Trailer, a three-minute movie presentation that allows students to see the correct word/picture/definition matches. When finished, students are asked to rearrange cards if needed to make corrections. Students can watch the trailer a second time if needed.
