What’s Inside a Cell?
3
You have organs... Cells have organelles!!
4
Mitochondria Rod-shaped organelles with double membrane - Mitochondria convert energy stored in glucose into ATP (adensosine triphosphate)
5
Ribosomes Makes protein for the cell Found in the cytoplasm or on the endoplasmic reticulum
6
Nucleus & Nucleolus Nucleus - Membrane bound structure containing the cell’s genetic information. ( DNA and RNA) Nucleolus – responsible for synthesizing ribosomes
7
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Rough ER: has ribosomes attached to its’ membrane. Helps modify proteins & transport proteins through the cell. Smooth ER: does not have ribosomes attached to its’ membrane. Helps produce and digest lipids
8
Golgi Body (Golgi Apparatus) Flattened sac-like organalle. Packages proteins into membrane- bound vesicles for “export” from the cell.
9
Lysosome Vesicles containing digestive enzymes Digestion of cell nutrients
10
Cell Membrane Thin layer of protein and phospholipids that surrounds the cell Provides protection and regulates what enters and leaves the cell
11
Vacuole Stores materials, like water and food Fluid filled membrane cavity
12
Cytoplasm Gel-like substance that is found between all the organelles Fills the extra space and gives the cell structure
13
Cell Wall Tough, rigid outer covering of a cell Provides plants shape, support, &protection IN PLANT CELLS ONLY!!
14
Chloroplast Convert sunlight + water + CO2 into glucose (energy) ONLY IN PLANT CELLS!!
