C ELEBRATIONS AND SPECIAL DAYS FISTA (Tampere) UN Day Carnival (Spanish) International fair / marketplace (sharing various components from students’ home cultures) FISTA Fun Day (school spirit): 6 th graders organize activity stations, 5 th graders guide mixed groups of 1 st –4 th graders through the activities/tasks Santa Lucia Day International School of Vantaa ISVentures (mixed 1st–9 th grade groups, awards for co-operation) Language fair

I NTEGRATION AND COMMUNITY PRACTICES Support for new students/families Orientation Day for new families: explaining school culture, giving a tour, meeting staff etc. Student tutors/guides for new students (FISTA friends) Tour of the school, explaining the timetable, connecting with school organization, making sure that newcomers are not alone on the playground/cafeteria etc. Questionnaire for new students/parents (after being in school for a while): what their experience has been so far: Have you been welcomed? Do you know the teachers’ names? What would you have hoped would have been different? What could your classmates have done differently to help?

I NTEGRATION AND COMMUNITY PRACTICES CONT ’ D First impression that students have has a direct effect on parents’ attitudes towards school Outreach to community: giving back “All different – all equal” Collection of supplies/donations for Syrian refugees (moving to Tampere) For common good / belonging to a community

N ATIVE TEACHERS IN THE WORK COMMUNITY Personal tutor for non-Finnish teachers (Niittykumpu school, some experiments at FISTA and EIS) Assisting with Finnish translation during and after meetings Translation assistance with forms/guidelines/curriculum New teacher support: make sure to feel included, introducing to culture, checking in regularly

N ATIVE TEACHERS IN THE WORK COMMUNITY CONT ’ D How can non-Finnish teachers lend support to others? Cultural sensitivity training Resources (websites, books textbooks, games) Expertise with English grammar Different perspective/training Traditions, celebrations (Halloween etc.) Palkki lessons: rotational teaching method (4–8 groups taught in rotation – each teacher repeats the same series of lessons with each of four groups) Topic examples: reading and understanding, topic research, poetry and writing, spelling
