1 Global Learning and the WBQ

2 What is the WBQ? Is a recognised qualification for 14-19 year olds It build builds the essential skills required for work, university and life The new revised and more rigorous Welsh Baccalaureate is based on a Skills Challenge Certificate and Supporting Qualifications. The primary aim is to promote essential skills for employment and to provide opportunities through three Challenges and an Individual Project.

3 What skills? Literacy & numeracy digital literacy critical thinking, problem solving planning, organization, creativity, innovation and personal effectiveness. These skills should be developed from the beginning of formal education – see Donaldson

4 The WBQ Structure

5 3 levels The qualification has three levels: Advanced - (completed in sixth form) = A-level National - (completed in year 10 and 11) KS4 = GCSE A*-C Foundation - (completed in year 10 and 11) KS4 = GCSE D-G The Advanced is worth 1 A-level and the National/Foundation is worth 1 GCSE.

6 Supporting Qualifications The Supporting Qualifications will be made up of the following components: English/Welsh Language GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy GCSE A-levels, GCSE’s or equivalent

7 To achieve the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate learners must achieve the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate together with the following supporting qualifications: English/Welsh Language GCSE and Mathematics/Numeracy GCSE at A*-C level and 2 A-level’s at A*-E or equivalent. To achieve the National Welsh Baccalaureate learners must achieve the National Skills Challenge Certificate (A*-C) together with the following supporting qualifications: English/Welsh Language GCSE, Numeracy GCSE and 3 other GCSE’s (maximum of 2 being GCSE equivalent qualifications) at A*-C level. To achieve the Foundation Welsh Baccalaureate learners must achieve either the National or Foundation Skills Challenge certificate together with the following supporting qualifications: English/Welsh Language GCSE, Numeracy GCSE and 3 other GCSE’s (maximum of 2 being GCSE equivalent qualifications) at A*-G level.

8 Skills Challenge Certificate The Skills Challenge Certificate will be made up of the following components: Individual Project: 50% Enterprise and Employability Challenge: 20% Global Citizenship Challenge: 15% Community Challenge: 15%

9 Global Citizenship Challenge – what skills? LO1 Be able to apply Critical Thinking and Problem Solving LO2 Be able to apply Creativity and Innovation LO3 Understand issues involved in a Global Citizenship Challenge

10 Global Citizenship Challenge - Tasks 1. Develop and present a written Personal Standpoint on (the global issue) including: facts, factors, differing opinions and viewpoints including those of peers; consideration of the credibility of sources used; relevant factors – political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental (PESTLE). 3. Produce a Personal Review of the raising awareness activity including: development and application of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving; development and application of Creativity and Innovation. 2. Develop and implement as an individual or a team (consisting of 3-6 members) a Raising Awareness activity on (the global issue) for (specify target audience). Produced on an individual basis a Raising Awareness Pack which could include evidence demonstrating the: generation and evaluation of ideas for raising awareness; selection of one idea; development and implementation of the idea including appropriate problem solving and decision making techniques; materials and resources to be used in the raising awareness activity.

11 How can you plan for these type of activities in KS3 and KS2? ACTIVITY 1 - How do you currently deliver these skills in your curriculum? Develop and present a written Personal Standpoint Produce a Raising Awareness Pack Produce a Personal Review ACTIVITY 2 - Can Global Issues be addressed using these approaches? Can these resources on FAIR TRADE be used in any way to help prepare the 3 tasks?
