DESIGN STRATEGIES BY JACOB SEYDEL

Putting stress on something in order to make it stand out is emphasizing something. Emphasis is placed on what the author intends to be the focus point of the text EMPHASIS

The emphasis for this ad is clearly on LeBron James. He is the centerpiece of the ad and he is by far the largest image in the ad.

The emphasis for this text is on the truck in the middle. The truck is the focal point of the text and this is what the author wanted so Ford could sell more trucks.

CONTRAST Contrast is a difference between two elements used to make something stand out.

In this text, there is a stark contrast between the white face background and the butterfly. This draws attention to the butterfly. The black bordering also contrasts to the title of the film as well as the face.

In this text the contrast is between the image on the left of the hand which the author considers “chaos”, and the picture on the right of the phone which the author considers “order.”

ORGANIZATION The way that elements are arranged as a whole text is the way that they are organized. This can be used to place importance on certain elements or group different elements together.

The organization of this text groups all the information that is related together while putting the figure of the main article, Drew Brees, in the middle.

In this text, the articles that the newspaper editor deemed more interesting are in a more central position of the page. The less important articles are on the outside edges.

ALIGNMENT The way that the different elements line up in a text is the alignment. The alignment of a text, if utilized properly, can control where the audience’s eyes move to on the page.

This table of contents uses alignment to guide the audience’s eye down the page and direct them to the different chapter titles.

The alignment in this text puts the title of prescription drug abuse aligned with the picture of a person taking a pill. They did this to draw more interest to the article than either element would on their own or aligned differently.

PROXIMITY The closeness and space between the different elements in a text is their proximity. Proximity can be used to place emphasis on one element by leaving it on its own in big text, or it can leave less important information grouped together on the bottom of a page in small text.

Tom Clancy is in big letters on its own on the top of this text. The author’s name is very important so it is alone. The title of the book is also on its own in big letters on the bottom. This makes it stand out.

All of the related materials on this website are grouped together. These include the different scores for games and different articles.

COLOR The use of different colors in a text can lead to different feelings about the elements. Bright colors such as red, orange, and yellow are called warm colors. These colors tend to excite people and are usually viewed as emotionally intense. Colors such as blue and green are called cool colors. These colors tend to relax people. Black and white, and the use of different shades of grey also fall under the design strategy of color.

The background color is a bright color meant to promote the intensity of the movie. The movie is an action movie so the orange makes people think the movie is exciting.

The color of the cloud turns from whit to a dark shade of grey. This is meant to show that the cloud became angry when the man touched him.

FRAMING Framing includes how a text is literally framed, but also how images within the text create focus points to draw our eyes.

The picture of the shark is in a separate frame from all of the text to keep the audience’s eyes drawn on it.

The man is in the box of water, which serves as a frame for him. It draws the audiences attention away from the forest background and to him.

SEQUENCE The order in which the different elements of a text are displayed is the sequence.

The sequence of the scenes shown are meant to show the negatives of not having DirecTV to convince the audience to buy the service.

The sequence of events that the user of this website performs is meant to draw their attention to the problem that the tigers are having, then to convince them to run. This is more effective than just laying all the information out at once because the audience may get bored or too lazy to read it all at once.
