IP1.25.4 Different types of wave © Oxford University Press 2011 There are two different types of wave, transverse waves and longitudinal waves. Both are made up of oscillations. The oscillations that make up the waves are slightly different.
3
IP1.25.4 Different types of wave © Oxford University Press 2011 Transverse waves have oscillations that are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer.
4
IP1.25.4 Different types of wave © Oxford University Press 2011 The ripples on the surface of a pond are transverse waves.
5
IP1.25.4 Different types of wave © Oxford University Press 2011 The mechanical wave on this spring is also a transverse wave.
6
IP1.25.4 Different types of wave © Oxford University Press 2011 Examples of transverse waves include: water waves light microwaves x-rays mechanical waves on strings some mechanical waves on springs.
7
IP1.25.4 Different types of wave © Oxford University Press 2011 In longitudinal waves the oscillations are to and fro along the same direction as the energy transfer. They are parallel to the direction of energy transfer.
8
IP1.25.4 Different types of wave © Oxford University Press 2011 Sound is an example of a longitudinal wave. If you look closely at a speaker you see the speaker cone moving in and out.

IP1.25.4 Different types of wave © Oxford University Press 2011 Examples of longitudinal waves include: Sound Ultrasound Some mechanical waves on springs One type of seismic wave in earthquakes
