Waves Waves – disturbances that carry energy through matter or space but don’t carry matter. Mechanical waves – waves that require matter to carry the energy (sound, water) Electromagnetic waves – waves that do not require matter to travel Transverse waves – waves that travel in a single direction while the matter moves at a 90 o angle from the direction of the wave

Waves Transverse waves – light, water, microwaves, x-rays, and radio waves Crest – the highest point of a transverse wave Trough – the lowest point of a transverse wave
6
Waves Compressional waves (longitudinal waves) – matter moves forward and backward in the same direction as the wave (sound, first wave in an earthquake) Compression – where molecules in a wave are close together Rarefaction – where molecules are far apart in a longitudinal wave.
