W RITE ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS. What is a tropism? Describe one kind of tropism. Tropism is the response of a plant to something in the environment. Phototropism: is a response to light in which the stem bends towards or away from light. Gravitropism: is a response to gravity; the roots grow down andthe stem up.

Define biotic and abiotic factors and give an example of each. Biotic: living organisms in the ecosystem. Ex.: Humans, animals, plants. Abiotic: nonliving parts. Ex.: sun light, air, water.

Explain the role of the respiratory system in keeping the body’s systems in balance. Lungs take in oxygen. Other parts of the respiratory system transfer it to the blood. Carbon Dioxide is removed from the blood and then exhaled from the body.

Describe two biotic and two abiotic factors in an ecosystem. Biotic: plants – they are living organisms that take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen cleaning the air. They also serve as food for animals. Animals – they are living organisms that consume plants or other animals and serve as food for others as well. Abiotic: air– nonliving factor that all living things need the oxygen in the air to live. water– nonliving factor that cells in all living organisms need to continue living.

M ATCH THE DEFINITION WITH THE CORRECT TERM. W RITE THE LETTER ON THE LINE NEXT TO THE DEFINITION. Thin outer layer of cells in a plant. Vascular tissue that carries glucose throughout a plant. A small hole through which water and gases pass in and out of a plant. Vascular tissue that moves water and minerals from the roots to other parts of a plant. Loss of water from a leaf. a Transpiration b Xylem c Pholem d Epidermis e Stoma d a c b e

R EAD EACH QUESTION AND CIRCLE THE BEST ANSWER. All the cells in the body need which of the following in order to make the body run smoothly? a) A salty environment. b) A steady supply of sugar. c) A constant oxygen pressure. d) A particular temperature range.

Which system of the body takes in materials and breaks them down into simpler substances that the body can use? a) The skeletal system. b) The nervous system. c) The digestive system. d) The endocrine system.

What waste does the respiratory system remove from the body? a) Polluted air. b) Used nutrients. c) Carbon dioxide. d) Carbon monoxide.

What is the job of the tendon? a) It moves the hinge joint. b) It attaches muscle to bone. c) It sends messages to the brain. d) It connects the bones in a joint.

What is the function of the circulatory system? a) To release energy from the cells. b) To collect and process information. c) To carry nutrients around the body. d) To regulate the release of hormones.

How can you tell angiosperms from gymnosperms? a) Only angiosperms are vascular. b) Only gymnosperms are vascular. c) Only angiosperms produce flowers. d) Only gymnosperms produce flowers.

W RITE T (T RUE ) OR F (F ALSE ) ON THE LINE BEFORE EACH STATEMENT. Plants produce carbon dioxide and water in the process of photosynthesis. Most organisms depend on plants for oxygen. Glucose is produced in the mitochondria or plants. Cellular respiration occurs only in animals. Both plants and animals depend on the carbon dioxide-oxygen cycle. F T F F T
