 Water that doesn’t soak into the ground or evaporate but instead flows across Earth’s surface

 When water travels down the same slope time after time it will eventually create a path. This movement of soil and rock by water is called water erosion.

 A youthful stream erodes its bottom more than its sides. They flow swiftly often over rapids and waterfalls. They are usually narrow with steep sides  A mature stream flows less swiftly, with erosion mostly along its sides; many rocks are eroded. They reach level ground, discharge slows, and began to form meanders.  The old stream meanders slowly through a broad, flat floodplain. These streams are wide with strong meanders. Often deposit sediment along their banks or into deltas.

young mature old

 Runoff enters small streams, which join together to form larger streams.  Larger streams come together to form rivers.  Rivers grow and carry more water as more streams join.

 A river that overflows its banks can bring disaster by flooding homes or washing away bridges or crops.

 Groundwater dissolves limestone (rock) to make caves.

 Underground rock near the surface is dissolved by groundwater  OR a cave collapses

 Waves constantly pound against the shore and break rocks into even smaller pieces.

 When waves crash against the rocks and cliffs sediments in the water grind against the cliffs, slowly wearing the rock away.

 Waves break rocks and seashells down to sand-sized particles. This constant wave motion and bumping not only breaks down particles but also smoothes off their jagged corners making them rounded. The sand color is determined by the rocks and shells found in the region

 Sand deposits that lay parallel to the shore.  Carried in by breaking waves.

 Next…read and answer the passages and questions from the Ed Helper packet.  HOMEWORK: Review for Erosion quiz
