2 Characteristics of Romanticism
Romanticism, both transcendentalist and dark, came from a short, rebellious era of authors. Romanticism derived from the English rebels around the 1800s, and, in some areas, peaked about mid-century. It was a literary way of showing opposing opinions of the establishment of an aristocratic society and “enlightened” favoritism. Romanticism was mostly accepted amongst different forms of growing art (i.e. visual, musical, and literary).

Romance is used to describe this form of literature because it refers to the descriptive imagery and natural occurrences or phenomena that are often featured in dark romanticism. 5 Edgar Allan Poe Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1809.
Both of his parents passed when Poe was only three years old. Poe was adopted by John Allan, a wealthy tobacco merchant, and his wife, where they raised Edgar in Richmond, Virginia. Poe dreamed of being an author at a young age in emulation of his childhood hero, Lord Byron, the British poet. Many of Poe’s writes were inspired by people that Poe had met throughout his lifetime.

7 Nathaniel Hawthorn Born in Salem, Massachusetts on July 4,1804. (Born Nathaniel Hathorne) Related to John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who did not repent his actions. Graduated from Bowdoin College in 1825. Published his first novel in 1828. The Scarlett Letter was published in 1850 and was followed by several other successful novels.

8 Herman Melville Born in Manhattan, New York August 1,1809 (Born Herman Melvill ) Raised by his biological parents, and was the third of eight children. He did not attend college ( After his father’s death the wealthy family was left in poverty without finances for college) His first novel was Typee, and it was published in It became a huge success.
