1 Inquiry Lab: Volume of Rectangular Prisms
Chapter 11 Pg You may work the problems in your book or on your own paper.

2 Inquiry—How can you use models to find volume?
Desmond is purchasing a storage cabinet. The cabinet is 2 ft wide, 3 ft long, and 6 ft tall. What is the volume of the cabinet?

3 Investigation 1 Volume is the amount of space inside of a three-dimensional figure. Volume is measured in cubic units. We are going to be drawing cubes. Each cube represents 1 ft3. Draw a figure that is 2 cubes wide, 3 cubes long, and 6 cubes tall.

4

5 Steps Step 1 was to build the model.
Step 2—Count the number of cubes used to build the model. The model uses cubes. So, the volume of the cabinet is ft3. 36 36

6 Find the Product Find the product (multiply) of the dimensions of the cabinet. 2x3x6=36 So, the product is as the volume. the same

7 Collaborate Use the next 5 minutes to complete the problems in the collaborate section. List the dimensions in the appropriate blanks. ***Remember: All of your totals must equal 36.

8 Collaborate Answers 6 x 2 x 3 = 36 12 x 3 x 1 = 36 2 x 2 x 9 = 36

9 Investigation 2 Look at the figure…
The model to the right is cubes long, cube wide, and cube tall. Count the number of cubes used to build the model. The model uses cubes. So, the volume of the model is ft3. Compare the product of the dimensions of the prism with its volume. 2 ½ x 1 x 1 = 2 ½ They are 2 ½ 1 1 2 ½ 2 ½ the same

10 Investigation 3 Because we are not going to have candy, we will skip step 1. Draw a model on the space to the right that is 2 ½ cubes long, 2 cubes wide, and 1 cube tall. Count the number of cubes used to build the model. The model uses whole cubes and half cubes. Two halves equals one whole. So, a total of cubes were used. The volume of the prism is units3. Compare the product of the dimensions of the prism with its volume. 2 ½ x 2 x 1 = 5 They are 4 2 5 5 the same

11 Collaborate Turn to page 717 in your book. Complete numbers You have 10 minutes.
