2 AGENDA: 1. Sample college application essay - REVISIONS. 2. Slaughterhouse-Five Group Work – examining the thesis statements.

3 “BELLRINGER” – COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY SAMPLE: Every day this week, you have seen and commented on a different college application essay. Today is a bit different. You will finally put your criticism to use and REVISE a potential college application essay.

4 REVISE A COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY SAMPLE: 1.Read through the essay. 2.Consider how it fulfills the goal of a personal statement. 3.Make revisions to better the overall effect of the essay. 4.You can be creative with your revisions.

5 C OLLEGE A PPLICATION E SSAY : Initial draft of the college application essay is DUE tomorrow. It must be typed, and it should be a complete draft. Approximately 500 words in length. USE THE DRAFTS FROM THIS WEEK TO SHAPE YOUR ESSAY.

6 Slaughterhouse-Five Thesis Statements: Each group will present its thesis and textual support. As the group presents, you will take notes regarding their argument and list questions/suggestions for the group.

7 In the same groups in which you’ve been working, identify the following: For each statement, identify the following in the space provided: 1. The effectiveness of the thesis (the merit of the argument). Does it work? 2. If it works: how would you support your thesis? 3. If it doesn’t: how would you change it?

8 Sample Thesis Statement: Most people’s interpretation of a war novel would be about maybe two countries fighting for a common purpose. In Slaughterhouse 5, Vonnegut uses the lives of soldiers, and the struggles they had to deal with within themselves during and after the war to criticize war in general.
