“People, don't you understand, the child needs a helping hand Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day. Take a look at you and me, are we too blind to see? Do we simply turn our heads and look the other way?” The author thinks criminals are children who need help. Do you agree with him? Why? Why not?

Past unreal conditional We use the past unreal condition to talk about situations that didn´t happen in the past. In the if clause, we use the past perfect. In the main clause, we use would have + Past Participle If we had given him a helping hand, he wouldn´t have become a criminal. Third Conditional

Let´s think what might have happened differently if... 1.the boy hadn´t been born in the ghetto. 2. the boy hadn´t felt so hungry. 3. the boy hadn´t bought a gun. 4.we had taken a look at him. If the boy hadn´t been born in the ghetto, he would probably have had better opportunities. If the boy hadn´t felt so hungry, he wouldn´t probably have become a criminal. If the boy hadn´t bought a gun, he wouldn´t have stolen a car. If we had taken a look at him, he would probably have felt loved, and he wouldn´t have become a criminal.
