People in prison are said to be incarcerated

3 Penitentiary Places of confinement to remove offenders from the environment and make them work, isolating them in cells Were attacked as cruel and barbaric

Places of confinement to reform offenders into law-abiding people who worked

It’s about retribution, incapacitation, and deterrence

Those who pose a threat to national security Have individual cells Are in lock down 23 hours a day One hour exercise by themselves Meals served through cell door Every move is monitored by surveilance

9 Maximum Need to provide maximum internal and external supervision of inmates High security perimeters, many check points inside Inmates present serious escape risks or pose serious threats to themselves or others Supervision is direct and constant

10 Medium Inmates present a moderate escape risk or may pose a threat to other inmates. Supervision is still constant and direct but more work and program opportunities available

11 Minimum The goal is to return the inmate to a greater sense of responsibility and independence Inmates not considered a serious risk to others. Program participation typically mandated and geared to reintegrating them into society. Access to the community is limited and under the supervision of staff members

Medium security (minimum outside the gates)

14 Lino Lakes Used to be a juvenile facility Now houses adult males
Medium security Most serious sex offenders are housed there

15 Oak Park Heights MN only maximum security prison
Doesn’t compare to Super Max, however House inmates from other states also

16 Shakopee Women’s facility – only one in the state (500+ inmates)
Houses all levels of offenders No perimeter wall or fence Chemical dependency treatment unit, parenting unit and education unit Once a month kids can stay with mom Cosmetology, office support classes, other college classes offered Service dog training program (service dogs)

Jails – county facilities Keep adults while they wait for trial Punishing them for less than a year once they have been convicted
