 Whitey Bulger was born James Joseph Bulger Jr. on September 3, 1929, in Dorchester, Massachusetts.  One of six children born to Roman Catholic Irish-American parents  Bulger was a troublemaker as a child, and even lived out the childhood fantasy of running away with the circus when he was 10 years old.  Whitey Bulger was first arrested when he was 14 years old, for stealing, and his criminal record continued to escalate from there  he was arrested for larceny, forgery, assault and battery, and armed robbery and served five years in a juvenile reformatory.  he joined the Air Force where he served time in military jail for assault before being arrested for going AWOL.  he received an honorable discharge in 1952.  Bulger had joined a street gang known as the "Shamrocks" and would eventually be arrested for assault, battery and armed robbery. He was sentenced to a juvenile reformatory at only the age of 14  Bulger developed a reputation as a thief and street fighter fiercely loyal to South Boston Early Life

On June 12, 2013, Bulger went on trial for 32 counts of racketeering, money laundering, extortion, and weapons charges, including his complicity in 19 murders. On August 12, 2013, he was found guilty on 31 counts, including both racketeering charges, and was found to have been involved in 11 murders. On November 14, 2013, Bulger was sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus five years for his crimes by U.S. District Judge Denise Casper. Bulger is now inmate number 02182-748 currently incarcerated for life at the United States Penitentiary Coleman II in Sumterville, Florida. Crimes charged for: Terms: Racketeering: Traditionally, obtaining or extorting money illegally or carrying on illegal business activities, usually by Organized Crime. Incarcerated: To put in a prison or jail. Bulger was prominently listed on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, 2nd behind Osama bin Laden

Beginning in 1975, Bulger served as an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). As a result, the Bureau largely ignored his organization in exchange for information about the inner workings of the Italian American Patriarca crime family. Beginning in 1997, the New England media exposed criminal actions by federal, state, and local law enforcement officials tied to Bulger. For the FBI especially, this has caused great embarrassment. On December 23, 1994, after being tipped off by his former FBI handler about a pending indictment under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), Bulger fled Boston and went into hiding. For 16 years, he remained at large. Authorities received a tip from a woman in Iceland that Bulger was living in a Santa Monica, California, apartment near a beach. Bulger was charged with murder, "conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, narcotics distribution and money-laundering". Agents found "more than $800,000 in cash, 30 firearms and fake IDs" at the apartment Evidence Against Bulger

Books and Movies About Bulger

Differential - Association Theory I believe Whitey Bulger represents the differential by association theory because he was associated with gangs his whole life. James Bulger was the oldest of three sons. Their father lot his arm while working, causing them to be in poverty because he could not work. Bulger then became interested in robberies. I believe since his behavior started at a young age and he got associated with gangs that this theory explains his deviant behavior. Bulger was in prison many times on different accounts, he was always meeting new people and bonding with them. Not only did he bond with criminals, he made deals with the FBI. I believe he has a need to always be with someone. He doesn’t like being alone. Another example of this is he had a girlfriend that actually helped get him arrested. The FBI targeted in finding her thinking it would lead to Whitey, which it did. That is why I believe the defferential theory is one that best explains Whitey Bulger. Theory of Deviance
