2 Your closing Sentence Should leave no doubt in the reader’s mind that you are finished It should leave the reader with a feeling that you have done what you intended to do

4 Not so good endings …. The End
And that’s all I have to say about the story and that’s how it happened. Therefore what I have said is true and that’s all. I hoped you liked my story. It may sound unbelievable but it is really true so you see what I mean?

5 So…………….. Don’t end with a quick sentence to indicate your paragraph or story is over

6 3 ways to close for beginner writers
Restate in another way what you said in the beginning. Try not to use the same words. Use a thesaurus for synonyms. Summarize the key idea of the story/paragraph Provide a clincher sentence or concluding sentence that clinches the point made in the paragraph/story or in other words, gives the main impression of the experience being described

7 Remember Make the conclusion fit the tone of the paragraph/story
A funny brief, clever conclusion might fit a humourous paragraph about automobile drivers A serious paragraph about dangerous drivers might need a more formal ending Never introduce new ideas!

8 Use Transition Words Therefore, as a result, consequently, etc. are good for concluding, summarizing, and showing results in an informational piece of writing

9 Examples Let’s look at some examples

10 The Last Day of School I sat in my desk, sweat dripping down my face. I shut my eyes tight, then opened them. I looked at my watch: 11:27. Three minutes! Three minutes until I heard a sound, a sound that would set me free for three months of total nothingness. Ms. Smith rambled on about pi and figuring out percentages. 11:28. I stared at my watch. I looked as the seconds ticked down to freedom from SCHOOL! 11:29:50. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 BRRRIIINNNGGG! The bell rang! I pulled on my backpack, tore out of the room, sprinted down the stairs, sped down the hallway, and bounded out the door. I dashed home and picked up a snack. I popped a video into the VCR, turned on the TV, and relaxed. Ahhh… what a glorious day!

11 Yellow Mama Who would have thought moving to the country would bring our family such delight. When I was one year old we moved to a farm about seven miles from the highway. After we arrived and were fairly well settled we found out there were some cats living on the farm, too. Yellow Mama was one of them. She was a yellow cat with a white bib. Yellow Mama was a gentle cat, in the years that followed she had at least five batches of kittens. She cared for them all and they usually looked like her, but not always. Sometimes she had six kittens in one batch! When I was seven years old Yellow Mama was still with us. During the summer, Kirk, my brother who was nine, and I decided we wanted to climb a big rock on the hillside near our house. We were almost to the rock when I saw poor Yellow Mama lying near a brush, dead. I told Kirk to come see what had happened. We were both very sad, we had loved her very much. We decided not to climb the rock, I was crying. When we were running back to the house, mom heard me crying and came out to see if I was hurt. We told her what had happened and then went into the house. When dad came home we told him. The next day he buried Yellow Mama. He said it looked like a snake or something had bitten her neck. I will never forget that cat. I am twelve years old now and still think about how friendly and kind she was. Yellow Mama had been a good cat.

12 Your ending…………… Does your last line provide a feeling of closure?
Or…Is the reader left up in the air? Think about this and take some time now to rethink your ending. Cross out your original ending if you think it needs improvement and, rewrite it.
