2. EGYPTIAN INFLUENCES ON NUBIA Nubians were influenced by Egyptians. They worshiped gods sacred to Egypt. They adopted the customs and clothing styles. They even adapted to building Egyptian Pyramids.

3. KUSH GOVERNMENT Kush was home to one of Africa’s most advanced governments of its time. The government was centered around equality. Men and woman were equal. Napata was the first capital of Kush. Piankhi united Egypt and Kush. Meroe was the second capital of Kush.

4. KUSH POLITICAL AND COMMERCIAL RELATIONS WITH EGYPT Kush conqured all upper and lower Egypt. They even established their own Dynasty! They moved goods around The Niles’ cataracts. They traded the goods with Egypt.

5. MEROE AND KUSH ECONOMICS After the defeat by the Assyrians, Kush chose a new capital, Meroe. The defeat of the Kush taught the Kushites that they needed iron weapons. The people of Kush began to learn how to smelt iron. Meroe was an ideal location for smelting iron. Meroe traded its iron in Arabia. They traded Ivory, gold, and products made from iron. Trade was especially active with Egypt, which was under Greek rule beginning in the fourth century B.C.

8. AKSUM  Meroe was destroyed by a king in Aksum  Aksum is located in modern day Ethiopia and Eritrea  Aksum arose in the horn of Africa which is shaped like a rhinos horn  Aksum had across to trade to the Red Sea, Mediterrian Sea, Indian Ocean, and Nile Valley

TRADING  Most places in Africa traded a lot  Arabs traders built colonies and trading posts there  Kush and Aksum became a trading hub( a trading hub is in the center, and trades spread in many directions)  Traders come from Egypt,other parts of Africa,Arabia,the eastern Mediterrian,Persia,and India

EZANA  Ezana was a strong king who rose to the power in Aksum in A.D 325  First he took control of a trading colony on the coast of the Arabian peninsula  Then in 350 he conquered Kush and burned Meroe to the ground  Ezana made Christianity in his land, that became the main religion in his land

11. GE’EZ  Aksum had a written language called Ge’ez  Ge’ez became the basis for 3 languages that are used in the Ethiopia and Eritrea today  Ge’ez is still used in the Ethiopian church

14.  Herding and Farming Main Idea  In the south of the Sahara, because of the climate and desertification the soil became unsuitable for farming which caused the people in the area to start herding or slash-and-burn farming to help make the land suitable for farming.

15.  Belief Systems and Language  Like other ancient people, most Africans believe in more than one god, and that one god is more powerful than other, and is the one creator. They also believe that everything has a soul, which is called animalism. Since they didn’t have a written language to preserve their history, sometimes referred to as griots or storyteller.

16.  Bantu Speakers  The Bantu’s speak their own unique language and spoke very clearly and they had similar languages and culture that was shared with others.

17.  Migration: Begins  When the Bantu started migrating it was a slow process. They spread out to the south and east. They either lived on the Congo, small villages or moves farther south. In the south they adapted by herding and farming, they also kept their ability to make iron, which helped with farming.

VOCAB ART  Animalism- the belief that spirits exist in animals, plants, and other natural objects and natural forces  Griot- an official storyteller in an ancient African civilization.  Bantu- a group of West African people that gradually migrated eastward and southward, bringing forming and herding to new regions.  Migration- a movement from one region to another
