1 Age effects of annual carbon fluxes: Ongoing synthesis work
Jim Tang Institute of Plant Biology and Conservation Chicago Botanic Garden

2 How do GPP and R change with age?
A fundamental theory in ecological succession Model A: modified from Odum 1967 Model B: modified from Ryan et al. 1997

3 How do GPP and R change with age?
We are not able to quantify the changes of GPP and R with age. Therefore, most of ecosystem carbon models are not able to include age as a driving variable.

4 ChEAS sites More clearcut and wetland sites?

5 NEE, GEP and R vs. age in ChEAS sites
data

6 NEE/GEP (CUE) and WUE vs. age in ChEAS sites

7 Global context

8 Global GPP and NPP vs. age
0.95 quantile regression Data source: Sebastiaan et al. 2007

9 Global GPP and NPP vs. temperature

10 Global GPP and NPP vs. precipitation

11 How do GPP and R change with age?
