1
Objective SWBAT describe the MANY functions of proteins in the body (they are SOOOOO important!)
2
What are some sources of protein in your diet? MEAT (beef, chicken, turkey) FISH Dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese) NutsBeans Even veggies have a little!
3
Why Eating Protein is Important: Because the body doesn't store amino acids, as it does fats or carbohydrates, it needs a daily supply of amino acids to make new protein. Lack of protein can cause growth failure, loss of muscle mass, decreased immunity, weakening of the heart and respiratory system, and death.
4
What do proteins DO if they are so important? FUNCTION of Proteins:Proteins perform MANY functions. Almost EVERYTHING that happens in your body needs multiple proteins to be possible.
5
FUNCTIONS: Structure:your hair and nails are made of a protein called keratin Your tendons, skin, and ligaments are supported by a protein called collagen
6
FUNCTIONS: Messengers cells must be able to communicate with one another proteins on the outside of cells control this communication hormones are examples of proteins that help communicate
7
FUNCTIONS:Transportation There are proteins in cell membranes that control what things are allowed to flow in and out of the cell. Some are like tunnels that open wide to allow big molecules in and out. Proteins in your blood (hemoglobin) carry oxygen everywhere in your body
9
FUNCTIONS: Defense Antibodies are proteins that fight and destroy foreign bacteria and viruses to protect the cell. Movement Proteins called actin and myosin help your cells move around and are responsible for muscle contraction. You wouldn’t be able to MOVE without proteins!
10
FUNCTIONS: Enzymes Enzymes are proteins that are catalysts. This means that they control how fast chemical reactions occur (when molecules break apart and get put together). Enzymes work SO QUICKLY that some reactions take less than one second to occur. Without enzymes, some reactions could take HOURS or DAYS to occur
11
STRUCTURE of a Protein Proteins are LARGE molecules composed (made of) smaller pieces called amino acids.
12
STRUCTURE of a Protein Long chains of amino acids are folded in VERY specific ways. Each protein has a unique (one of a kind) way of being folded.
13
STRUCTURE of a Protein If the protein is placed into a dangerous environment, (if the temperature is too high or pH gets too extreme) the protein unfolds and will stop working. This is called denaturing.
14
Copy & answer questions 1. Describe four (4) of the MANY functions of proteins. 2. What does the structure of a protein look like? 3. What are some examples of protein in the diet? 4. Why is it important to make sure there is enough protein in your diet?

Independent Practice Homework–***DUE FRIDAY*** List all of the food you consume today starting at now and continue through this Thursday evening (tomorrow night). Notice that you have been requested to list EVERYTHING you consume…. We will use this for an activity on Tuesday.
