5 Turn to pg. 21 in your GUM book. For each sentence, label the following: Subject (S) Verb (V) Underline the prepositional phrase Preposition (P) Object of Preposition (OP)

6 Example at the top Carracks once sailed throughout the world.

7 1. In the fifteenth century, European shipbuilders built three- masted carracks with triangular sails.

8 2. The new design of these ships made long voyages easier.

9 3. The rudder and the compass, two inventions from China, helped sailors navigate and steer.

10 4. Europeans wanted silk and spices from Asia, and sailors began searching for better trade routes.

11 5. Seeking a new western route to Asia, Christopher Columbus landed on unfamiliar land.

12 6. Columbus thought the land was part of Asia, but others soon realized that this land to the west was an uncharted continent.

13 7. Soon sailors from many European countries were voyaging across the Atlantic.

14 8. In a few years, the invasion of the Americas had begun.

15 9. Corn, potatoes and other nutritious crops from America were brought to Europe, and many European farm animals were brought to America.

16 10. People from different cultures exchanged ideas and customs.

17 11. The highly effective constitution of the Iroquois League would impress Benjamin Franklin and George Washington in later years.

18 12. This league comprised five Native American groups in the New York region.

19 13. The establishment of European colonies had terrible results for many Native Americans, however.

20 14. Thousands of Native Americans died in battle, and even more died from European diseases.

21 15. Africans were enslaved and brought in chains to the American colonies.

22 16. Many cultures and ways of life were lost to the world forever.

23 Get out your copy of I Am the Cheese. This week there will not be a packet. You will have to do it on notebook paper.
