The beginning The battle of the somme started July 1 st 1916. it didn’t end until November 1916. For a lot of people, the battle of the somme was the battle that symbolised the horrors of the warfare in world war one, this one battle had marked effect on overall casualty figures and seemed to epitomise the futility of trench warfare.

Why the war started ! For a long time the French had been taking sever losses at verdun-to the east of Paris to relive the French the allied high command attacked the Germans. Then the Germans had to move some of there men away from verdun relieving the French.

The head of the french army general foch thought the attack would achive little however orders from armys political masters in london and paris made sure the battle would take place.

By the end of the battle, in november 1916, the british lost 420,000, the french lost nearly 200,000 men and the germans 500,000. the allied forces had advanced along a thrity-mile strip that was seven miles deep at its maximum.
