Telescope Teams – relationships with System Design General role of the Architect Group is ‘Guardians of the Design’. Telescope teams are a vehicle for this role.

Goals: –Identify, define and supervise the resolution of major issues. –Primarily technical issues, not to do normal design and system engineering work. –Assemble a prioritised, running list of issues –Limit the number of highest priority issues to about 5 at one time. –Items should be focussed, not too broad (e.g. ‘calibration’ is too broad). –Work on each issue should be no more than a few months long. –Frame issues so that there are clear boundaries and deliverable outcomes. –Operations issues are also to be included. Telescope Teams

Resolution Teams Actually carry out the work to resolve issues. Membership can be from anywhere – acknowledged experts. Teams to include: –A project manager, –A relevant Office staff. Members of consortia to: –Ensure relevant consortia are represented. –Ensure relevant knowledge and experience is available. RT –Check that there is sufficient resource to complete the task by the agreed time. –Provide updates to the TTs. –Maintain reporting on the relevant Confluence Page. Confluence to be used as a communications medium in the resolution of issues.

Key Points of Focus – items that affect the following: 1.High dynamic range imaging at L-band frequencies a)over full fields b)resolutions commensurate with 150-km baselines, c)sensitivity ~1500 m 2 /K. 2.Frequency range 0.35 – 20 GHz. 3.Natural-noise-limited integrations of ~1000 hr. 4.State-of-the-art performance up to 20 GHz. 5.Pulsar/transient capability. 6.These capabilities may not be available on ‘Day 1’, but it must be possible ‘ultimately’. Fundamental SKA1-mid Performance

Key Points of Focus – items that affect the following: 1.High brightness-temperature imaging 50 – 200 MHz. –Sensitivity ~1-2 mK. –20 deg 2 Fields-of-view. 2.~500 m 2 /K sensitivity from 110 – 350 MHz. 3.1000-hr integrations not limited by telescope systematic errors. 4.Resolution commensurate with ~60-km baselines. 5.These capability may not be available on ‘Day 1’, but it must be possible ‘ultimately’. Fundamental SKA1-low requirement

SKA1-low Current Issues Footer text Configuration & Calibration: The configuration of the telescope depends on calibration issues, and neither is finalized: –Calibration workshop, and ongoing analysis –Constraints on configuration collected –Proposed configurations will be evaluated/ranked –Results to feed into Systems Review and Consortium work Relocation of CSP to Perth could result in cost reductions: update study NTP time service: While the timing of telescope data is well defined, the component subsystems need a service providing (telescope) time. This is as yet unspecified.

SKA1-mid Current Issues RFI –Characterise External RFI environment at site (mainly measurements) –RFI flagging / blanking –RFI mitigation –Number of bits required for each band (RFI question) Clock offset scheme Construction Phasing Calibration –Calibration of subarrays –Calibration during long pulsar observations –Staggered noise diode switching Multiple pointings within a subarray Definition of maintenance subarray Response to transient triggers Subarray lifetime & scheduling System Eng. –Product Breakdown Structure –System Budgets: Performance –Phasing/prioritisation of requirements
