Deindustrialisation (A decrease in industry)
11
Deindustrialisation in the UK Much of the manufacturing that once took place in the UK has now moved to other parts of the world, particularly Asia.
12
When deindustrialisation happens it means unemployment happens. The most obvious signs of deindustrialisation are derelict buildings and vacant land. There becomes more ‘brownfield’ sites.
13
The redevelopment of these cities These cities face two challenges: To find new economic activities and jobs to compensate for those lost as a result of deindustrialisation To find new uses for empty factory buildings or to clear them and their waste heaps and so make way for some new land uses
14
Redevelopment and renewal strategy Meeting the two challenges can be combined into one redevelopment and renewal strategy. Actions are taken to improve or change the popular image of the town or city It may include a facelift. Improving the image can do much to attract much needed new investment and employment.
