Review: Cell Processes 1) Why do cells divide? 2) Which cells divide more frequently? 3) Which cells divide less frequently? 4) What stage are they in if they are not dividing? 5) What’s the name for “programmed cell death”? 6) Which cell division process creates IDENTICAL cell copies? Pre-assign numbers 1-6 to students…

Stages of Mitosis Get ready to write!

Cell Pictures/Labeling You need to draw how the cell looks for EACH stage of mitosis You must LABEL the parts of the cell However, for each additional picture, you only need to label the NEW structures

Interphase* NOT part of mitosis (precedes mitosis) Includes stages G1, S, G2 Cellular contents (organelles) copied Genetic material (chromatin) copied Checked for mistakes Chromatin is NOT condensed into chromosomes yet (can’t see it)

Prophase d Early ProphaseLate Prophase Chromatin condenses into chromosomes (now visible) Nucleolus disappears Nuclear envelope breaks down Two centrosomes form the mitotic spindle (made of microtubules) Centrosomes pushed to opposite poles of cell Prophase*

Metaphase* Easiest stage to identify Chromosomes align down the middle Known as the “metaphase plate” Microtubules attach to centromeres of sister chromatids

Anaphase* Early AnaphaseLate Anaphase Microtubules pull sister chromatids apart (centromeres split) Individual chromosomes are pulled by the microtubules to opposite poles (same amount of genetic material on either side)

Telophase* Begins after chromosomes stop moving Spindle fibers dissolve Chromosomes uncoil and revert to chromatin form A new nuclear envelop forms around each chromatin mass (forms nucleus) Nucleoli appear Cleavage furrow forms at site of metaphase plate (middle)

Cytokinesis* Cytoplasm pinches inward (at the cleavage furrow) until cell is divided into two identical daughter cells Organelles reappear Both cells can now start the process again…

Interphase (Begins Again) d

Plant Cells* Process in plant cells is different than in animal cells No cleavage furrow... Why not?? Main difference is: Cell wall prevents cleavage furrow. Instead, vesicles from the golgi apparatus fuse in the center of the cell to create a cell plate Cell plate grows outward until it reaches the cell membrane, that then separates into two daughter cells

Identify the stage…

Mitosis Interactive http://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/En/HowTheBody Works/GeneticsIntroduction/CellDivision/MitosisI ntroduction/Pages/StagesofMitosis.aspx http://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/En/HowTheBody Works/GeneticsIntroduction/CellDivision/MitosisI ntroduction/Pages/StagesofMitosis.aspx

Mitosis Modeling Your job for today and tomorrow is to make a model of mitosis You will create images of each stage by drawing the cell stage on paper and using pipe cleaners as chromosomes You will use a smartphone to take a picture of each stage, and email them to yourself You will download those images and create a Google slides (only!!) presentation, with one phase for each slide You will write the description of each phase on each slide You will save the presentation as a PDF and email it to me, so I can print the slides You will then create a poster with the printed images to model mitosis We will complete this same process with meiosis post-vacation, so leave space! (AND CHOOSE PARTNERS WISELY!) I am about to explain a new class “roject.” A fairly detailed explanation is required, so please do NOT talk while I am speaking. Also, hold ALL questions until the end. Thank you

Description goes here… lkasdlkhglasidhgoaihsdlghsld Title of Stage Label

Logistics 3 people per group, you may choose your group but CHOOSE WISELY You may NOT work alone, though if your group members do not show up, you will continue solo You have the rest of today, and another full class period to work on this (to finish slides) You will have 15 minutes on Thursday to cut out the slides and put the posters together Then, you will take a quiz on mitosis Then, you will take a quiz on mitosis

Couple more things… Make sure at least one member of your group has a smartphone with wifi/ 3G so pics can be emailed (and make sure this person is reliable and will be here tomorrow!) This presentation is uploaded to the website already, so you can use these slides to guide your drawings There are additional resources on the website to help you Due to the large volume of ink/paper needed to print your slides, only groups who have a COMPLETE, ACCURATE, and VISUALLY APPEALING presentation will get their slides printed. Those who do not meet these qualifications will not receive credit. These people may take notes from the textbook while others work.

Finally… Make sure I “ok” each phase before taking your final picture Your presentation slides should be clear, concise, and easy to read from far away If you do not finish on Tuesday, you MUST come after school on Tuesday to finish so I can print your slides You are all responsible for your own grade. If your group members slack off, do not let that bring you down. Instead, rise above and do their work in addition to yours. It sucks, but it’s a part of life. Choose your partners wisely. YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOUR OWN EDUCATION!

Recap - Create image (one 8 x 11 paper) for each stage - Take a picture of each stage and email it to yourself - Download images and put each one on their own Google slide - Title each slide with the stage, and provide a brief description - Save presentation as a PDF and email it to Ms. Gately - On Thursday, cut out slides and create a poster QUESTIONS?? QUESTIONS??
