Example: The Yearbook: 1.Selection of indicators for tables and graphs agreed with the Eurostat production units. 2.The contractor drafts the text, tables and graphs and makes the extractions for maps. 3.The Eurostat production units are consulted on the content. 4.The contractor makes a PDF and the files translated to German and French. 5.The production units are consulted on the lay-out. The leaflet ’The European Union’ done without the contractor. Help asked from the national User support centres for the validation of the translation.

2 April 2009 – page 6 of 6 WHY? As fresher data is on-line the need of publications including also the Yearbook has been questioned. Some aspects for justification of the Yearbook: 1.It is the flagship publication for the external world. 2.Archiving function. 3.Motivation and identification to the authors (?) 4.The Japanese and Ukrainians have translated it to their languages. 5.Freshest data can be accessed through the data codes underneath each table, graph and map. 6.A good selection of tables, graphs and maps with accompanying text in form of a book is for some purposes more user friendly than the overwhelming web.
