Women’s education A CASE STUDY OF PAKISTAN

Background  Across Pakistan, women generally do not receive much education as compared to their male counterparts  According to a UNESCO study in 2006, 14 million girls received basic education while 18.3 million boys did, a disparity of 4.3 million  This is most prevalent in certain parts of Pakistan where extremists deny women the right to education

Factors 1. Terrorism  Some areas in Pakistan are controlled by powerful terrorist agencies  These terrorist believe that girls do not deserve the right to education  They use violence and threats to enforce such a rule Eg. In 15 th Jan 2009, the Taliban banned all girls in Swat Valley from attending school

Factors 2. Poor Implementation of Policies  There have been many attempts to improve the right of education in Taliban  However, these policies did not have support or resources to achieve its goals

Impacts (Individual) How do they feel?  Girls in Pakistan felt that the Taliban were abusing the name of Islam to carry out their evil deeds  These girls are eager to be educated but are too afraid of the harm that the Taliban can do to them to go to school

Impacts 1. Economic  Due to the low literacy rate in Pakistan, investors are unwilling to set up companies in the country  Citizens in the country also lack the qualifications or knowledge to find a job, resulting in widespread poverty 2. Social  Without being educated, Pakistan citizens are easily swayed to join militant organizations

impacts  Due to the lack of education, citizens are not grounded in moral values  Thus, Pakistan is ridden with crime 3. Political  Without education, Pakistan has difficulty producing good leaders lifting the country out of gloom

Future Advancements Is there hope for the future?  Ever since Malala’s actions were known to the world, the fight for women’s right of education has grown even stronger  Organizations all over the world (eg. UNESCO) are putting together more resources in a concerted effort to provide education for all
